Malachite Like emerald, malachite was also sought after by ancient followers of the Goddess who thought it possessed great powers. The Romans sometimes called it peacock stone, and dedicated it to the Great Goddess Juno, whose totem was a peacock. Malachite, when cut in a triangular shape, was thought to protect the bearer from the evil eye. It was often attached to a baby’s cradle to ward off evil spirits, and children who wore amulets made from malachite were protected from all harm. Malachite was also thought to protect a person against lightning, cure insect bites, relieve stomach aliments when powdered and drunk in milk, and relieve rheumatism in the elderly. One legend from Russia states that a person who drinks from a goblet made from malachite would be able to understand the language of animals.
